In alignment with our principles of working together, focusing on what we can control, and holding ourselves accountable, ATA has made a long-term commitment through the Decarbonization Fund to mitigate the impact of our carbon footprint by contributing for each trip taken by an ATA staff person, traveler, student or program staff. Through this fund, ATA committed to investing a minimum of $10,000 in 2022 in Cool Effect, a US nonprofit that supports projects that reduce carbon emissions while advancing other UN Sustainable Development Goals. The size of this fund has grown in subsequent years and we have reassessed where to invest funds on an annual basis based on areas of greatest need.
As 2024 draws to a close, we are thrilled that the fund has reached over $175,000 to date (over $83,000 raised in 2024). Staff volunteers have worked with Cool Effect to choose the three projects below for ATA’s 2024 contribution.
To bolster our commitment, ATA will match any individual contributions made by staff! For those interested in offsetting their personal carbon footprint in 2024, ATA will match your donation. ATA contributes $25 per person/per flight. This is approximately the cost to offset an economy round trip flight NYC-San Fran or NYC-London.
Please make your donation to one of the three projects below and forward your receipt to Accounting by Dec. 16 to have your 2024 donation matched!
Where Does The Money Go?
Cool Effect is home to over a dozen projects around the globe, all working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions everyday.
A Bearadise
These important old growth forests will reduce about 1.5 million tonnes of carbon in 30 years. This project ensures the survival of these trees, providing a safe home for the animals and clean air for Earth.
Beaut Down Under
This removal project planted 30 million native trees and shrubs in a globally-recognized biodiversity “hotspot” in southwest Australia.
Gas Buster
ODS gasses are 10,000 times more destructive than CO2, clean destruction and disposal of these chlorofluorocarbons are vitally important to fighting climate change. These dangerous gasses are collected in Chile and destroyed in France. Travel emissions are accounted for by the project.
90%+ Directly to Projects
